Historic Preservation Commission Vacancies

The City of Carlsbad is seeking residents interested in filling two vacancies on the City of Carlsbad Historic Preservation Commission. The commission advises the City Council and Planning Commission in all matters relating to the identification, protection, retention and preservation of historic areas and sites within the city.  

Commission Vacancies

There are currently two vacancies on the commission in Category 2A, which requires a background or interest in architecture, archeology, history, biology, engineering, geology or a related field. 

Commission Duties

  • Recommending the designation of historic landmarks or historic districts
  • Maintaining an inventory of historic resources
  • Rendering advice and guidance, upon the request of the property owner or occupant, on the restoration, alteration, decoration, landscaping or maintenance of any historical area or site
  • Conducting programs to educate local residents regarding historic places, structures or events

 Commission Membership

The commission consists of six members, five regular commission members appointed by the City Council and one ex-officio representative of the Planning Commission. Members normally serve four-year terms and must be residents of Carlsbad. 

Commission Member Qualifications

The five regular commission members include:

  • Three members, each of whom has a different recognized expertise or interest in architecture, archaeology, history, biology, engineering or geology
  • Two members who have an interest in local history and serve at large from the community 

Commission Meetings

Meetings are held the second Monday of every other month at 5 p.m. at City Hall, City Council Conference Room, 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive.  

How Do I Apply?

Applications are available on the city’s website or in the City Clerk’s Office located in City Hall at 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive. Applications must be submitted to the City Clerk's Office.

 What Training is Needed?

Historic Preservation Commission members are required to complete two hours of ethics training every two years and file a statement of economic interests annually.
