This Is Jazz! and Opera Previews Announced

The City of Carlsbad Cultural Arts Office is pleased to announce the 2017 schedule for This Is Jazz! And Opera Previews at the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium in the Carlsbad City Library complex, located at 1775 Dove Lane. Seating is limited and first come, first served. Admission is free. 

At a Glance 

  • A four-part lecture and performance series, This Is Jazz! covers an array of subjects on American jazz with live demonstrations by musical guests, and discussions between artists and the audience. 
  • This is Jazz! brings on-air host from San Diego’s award-winning radio station, KSDS Jazz 88.3, and program curator Claudia Russell together with some of Southern California’s finest musicians. 
  • The series takes place one Saturday per month at 4 p.m. Tickets are distributed at 3 p.m., and doors open at 3:45 p.m.

Jan. 14

World Influences on Jazz Guitar with Wayne Riker
Wayne Riker is a multi-genre guitarist, teacher and author. He's been sharing his talent and knowledge with audiences for over 50 years and brings a wealth of experience to the stage, as well as the classroom. 

Feb. 11 

Brass Bands and Mardi Gras featuring Euphoria Brass Band
Based in San Diego, EBB brings the sound of true New Orleans' brass bands to concert stages and streets of southern California. The band highlights the history and forward momentum of the classic Second Line sound. 

March 11

Piano Women in Jazz featuring Sue Palmer
Sue Palmer, San Diego's Queen of Boogie Woogie, is known for her swingin' style and blues grooves. As the leader of The Motel Swing Orchestra, she's been bringing people to the dance floor for decades. Sue is also dedicated to preserving the history of women in jazz and blues. 

April 8

Vocalese and Jazz Singing featuring Leonard Patton
With a voice that transcends genre, Leonard Patton is one of the most sought-after vocalists in the area. His soulful interpretations and warm stage presence also make him an important teacher for young singers. 

Opera Previews

  • Opera Previews features photos, videos and recordings to enhance musicologist Dr. Ron Shaheen’s lighthearted, jargon-free insights on the music, history, fabled performances and special attributes of San Diego Opera Productions. 
  • The series takes place one Saturday per month at 10 a.m. Doors open at 9:45 a.m.
