All applicants are assessed relative to the qualifications listed on the job posting. Applicant information will be reviewed by the Human Resources Department and the hiring manager. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications of the posting to be eligible for further consideration. However, meeting the minimum qualifications does not automatically guarantee an interview.
When are applicants notified of their status in an application process?
Typically applicants will receive correspondence within two work weeks of the job closing or first review date.
How can applicants send additional information to attach to their applications (i.e. resume or more job history information)?
They can email it to hr@carlsbadca.gov or fax it to 760-602-1119. They must make sure to reference the job applied for and their full name.
Do applicants have to take any tests to get a job at the City of Carlsbad?
Each job posting contains information about the selection process. Some positions require testing. A combination of one or more of the following may be used to assess applicants:
Application screening, oral interview, written test, performance test, computer skills test, writing exercise, assessment center, physical agility test (safety only), or supplemental questionnaire.
What is the supplemental questionnaire and how do applicants submit it?
A supplemental questionnaire consists of specific job-related questions that assist in identifying an applicant's qualifications and provide an opportunity to elaborate on his or her experience, skills and abilities. Not all jobs openings have a supplemental questionnaire. See the job announcement of the specific position to find out if a supplemental is required.
What does it mean when a filing deadline is not listed?
If an application deadline is not listed, the city is accepting applications until the position is filled, and the vacancy may close without notice. Those interested in a specific position are encouraged to apply soon as possible upon seeing the announcement. There is no guarantee that applications received after the specified "first application screening" will be reviewed.
Are applications accepted for jobs that are not listed as open? What if an applicant is interested in a position that is not on the list of openings?
Complete a Job Interest Card and sign up to receive an email notification when there are new job openings.
What is the best way to get started in a career in law enforcement?
How can an applicant determine if he or she is qualified for a position?
Refer to the qualifications section of the job announcement of the desired position.
Where is the city's employment office located?
1635 Faraday Ave., Carlsbad, CA.
Should a resume be included with the application?
A resume may be included with an application but it is not required unless indicated on the online job application.
If applicants need an accommodation for the interview or testing process, how can they make the request?
The City of Carlsbad is committed to the fair and equal employment of qualified persons with disabilities. While many individuals with disabilities can apply for and perform jobs without accommodation, it is the policy of the City of Carlsbad to reasonably accommodate qualified individuals with disabilities unless the accommodation would impose an undue hardship. Those who need an accommodation due to a disability can call 442-339-2440.
What is an eligibility list?
An eligibility list (also referred to as employment list) is a list of names of persons who have competed in an open or continuous selection process for a classification and are eligible for employment in that classification because they received a rating of "highly qualified," "qualified," or "satisfactory" during the examination process. Eligibility lists will remain in effect for one year, unless sooner exhausted. The human resources director may extend the duration of a list for up to one additional year.
