Applicants will be timed separately on each of the five events described below
Each test will be administered twice with the exception of the 1.5 mile run which will only be administered once
The fastest time of the two trials will be used as the final score
Applicants must successfully complete each event in order to continue to the next event
In addition to passing each event, applicants must also have a cumulative score of 384 points to pass the Physical Ability Test
Applicants that pass the Physical Ability Test, will be invited to continue in the selection process and placed on an eligibility list for one year
Event 1: 99-Yard Obstacle Course
This test simulates a short-distance foot pursuit such as might occur in the parking lot of an office complex
The test requires applicants to make frequent changes in direction while running as fast as they can
There will be several curb height obstacles as well as a 36” high obstacle that must be vaulted with at least one hand touching the obstacle during the vault
The test will be administered twice, with a two-minute rest period between administrations
The fastest time will be utilized as the final score
Event 2: Body Drag
This test simulates dragging someone who is physically incapacitated
The 165 pound “dummy” must start laying down (face up) and be dragged 32 feet
Time starts when the “dummy’s” feet cross the starting line and ends when the “dummy’s” feet cross the finish line
The test will be administered twice, with a two-minute rest period between administrations
The fastest time will be utilized as the final score
Event 3: Chain Link Fence Climb
This event will test the applicant’s ability to climb a six foot high chain link fence
Applicants are to run up to the fence (5 yds.), scale the fence, and continue running to the finish line (25 yards.)
Applicants may use any method they wish to get over the fence; however, they may not use the side supports in any manner to get over the fence
If they do, they will be scored as if they failed to get over the fence
The test will be administered twice, with a two-minute rest period between administrations
The fastest time will be utilized as the final score
Event 4: Wood Fence Climb
This event will test the applicant’s ability to climb a six foot high wood fence
Applicants are to run up to the fence (5 yards), scale the fence, and continue running to the finish line (25 yards)
Applicants may use any method they wish to get over the fence; however, they may not use the side supports in any manner to get over the fence
If they do, they will be scored as if they failed to get over the fence
The test will be administered twice, with a two-minute rest period between administrations
The fastest time will be utilized as the final score
Event 5: 1.5 Mile Run
This test simulates a long distance foot pursuit and requires that applicants run 1.5 miles
When taking the test, applicants should try to pace themselves at about ¾ speed for the first lap and a half (considerably faster than a jog, but slower than a sprint)
